Choosing the Perfect Time for Maternity Photos: Edwardsville IL Photographer Conner James Photography

It’s one of the happiest times in your life. You’re pregnant. You’re glowing and over-the-moon in love with the baby your body is creating. During the hustle and bustle of preparing for your newborn, you’ve made a point to book Glen Carbon, Illinois newborn photographer Conner James Photography. Owner and photographer Christine specializes in maternity and newborn photography, she even has her own home-studio in Edwardsville, Illinois. Not only is she a pro at what she does, but she also helps guide you through this exciting time. Because when it comes to newborn photography, you have questions - lots of questions. So take a few minutes for an easy read while this Glen Carbon photographer walks you through a few things she is most commonly asked.

Christine is often asked: “What are the best stages of pregnancy for maternity photos?” The St. Louis newborn photographer recommends having your photos done between 30 and 36 weeks. That’s if you’re having one baby and you are not a high-risk pregnancy. So, around month seven and eight your baby bump is typically round and pronounced. It’s pretty clear that you’re expecting but you’re not heavy to the point that you’re uncomfortable. Some maternity sessions can involve quite a bit of movement so you want to avoid doing anything that could induce early labor. But not to worry, Edwardsville, Illinois newborn photographer Conner James Photography is an expert at posing and staging all mama’s-to-be.

Another question Christine hears is: “When should I book my session if I’m having twins?” If you’re pregnant with multiples, things change a bit. Your baby bump will be much more prominent at a much earlier stage in the pregnancy. St. Louis photographer Christine recommends having your maternity photos taken between 24 and 30 weeks. Some mama’s expecting multiples start to show a pronounced bump as early as 18 to 20 weeks. While Glen Carbon photographer Christine can make magic with maternity photos at any time, she still suggests you pay attention to your body. The longer you wait with multiples, your body will have to work harder to fight fatigue, swelling, uncomfortability, etc. Multiples almost always deliver early so try to plan this milestone photo opportunity accordingly.

“Should I do things differently if I’m considered a high-risk pregnancy?” is one other common question Glen Carbon newborn photographer Christine hears. She notes that it’s definitely something to factor into your photo scheduling. You’ll want to go over your condition with your doctor so you can plan an ideal and safe time to have your maternity photos taken. Being high-risk can (but doesn’t always) put some limitations on your photo session. The good news is Edwardsville baby photographer Christine has great flexibility with her home-studio in Edwardsville, Illinois. So, if your doctor gives you location, weight or movement limitations - don’t worry. Christine will still be able to work absolute magic so you (and your bump) look simply gorgeous.

Last but certainly not least, Edwardsville, Illinois newborn photographer Christine gets asked:

“Can I take my maternity photos if I’m past 36 weeks pregnant?” Of course you can, however, Christine makes sure of a few things this late in the game. In her Glen Carbon, Illinois home-studio, she goes above and beyond to ensure that mama is comfortable, cool, and hydrated during the entire photo session. A number of breaks are taken so mama can rest and snack as she needs to. But to sum it up, as long as mama-to-be is mobile and feeling up to a maternity photo session, it can and will be done - professionally, simply, and beautifully by St. Louis newborn photographer Conner James Photography.

Glen Carbon Newborn Photographer: What to Expect During Your Baby's First Photoshoot with Conner James Photography

Now that your precious newborn has finally entered the world, you’re ready to capture every single sweet moment. If you’ve scheduled your newborn photo session with Edwardsville photographer Conner James Photography, you’re in great hands! Owner and photographer Christine is more than just a pro in newborn photography. Get comfortable while she tells you what to expect during your baby’s first photography session.

What is the process during a typical newborn photoshoot?

Once the family arrives at my home studio, I undress and swaddle the newborn in a colored wrap of the parent’s choosing. My studio is heated and kept that way during the entire photoshoot. I do this by design to keep newborns very warm and very comfortable. The warmer the baby is, the better they will fall asleep (if awake) and stay asleep if already catching a snooze. A sleeping newborn makes for a better session and better photos.

Photo sessions are two hours long. In that time I will change the newborn’s wrap up to three times. Nearly 100% of the time, the newborn stays asleep during all wardrobe changes. I attribute this to:

1). The baby having a full belly, and

2). Keeping the studio extremely warm

I will try to get each newborn photographed in 5-6 different studio props while they are wrapped. The end of each session is when I take nude photos (per the parents request). Newborns burn calories to keep themselves warm so I have an assistant making sure there is adequate heat directed at the baby during all nude sessions. After being a professional newborn photographer for nearly 13 years, I’ve learned how to move quickly while still achieving the parent’s dream of flawless, beautiful newborn photos.

What suggestions do you have for keeping the baby calm and comfortable?

I stand by three of the same answers for this question. If parents want their newborn to be calm, comfortable and sleepy throughout the photo session, the baby MUST be:

Freshly fed

Successfully burped

Kept very warm

I understand newborn’s can be finicky with feedings. They can cluster feed, eat several ounces then spit it all up and want more right after, etc. New mom’s can’t help this, and that’s okay! But if mom’s can get their newborn to eat even a little bit right before the photo session, it’s a big help. Sometimes, all the baby needs is a little bit to top them off.

I also need to stress how important it is that the newborn gets burped and actually burps. Many times my newborns may need a quick meal but don’t get a good burp or two out. This typically turns into a very gassy, uncomfortable, fussy newborn that won’t and can’t fall back asleep. No matter how well they are wrapped or how warm they are, a gassy baby will never be a settled baby. If my newborn is fed and burped, parents can leave the “keep the newborn warm” part to me! Because once they hit my super warm studio, it’s all sweet dreams from photo start to finish!

What types of props and settings do you use to create such beautiful images?

In my many years as a newborn photographer, I have gathered some of the cutest, most unique props and backgrounds. Everything from adorable wooden beds and hammocks to crescent moons, dreamcatchers and baskets. I love to showcase just how tiny each newborn is and that can be easily done by placing them inside of a bucket or a bowl. When I start my sessions with a newborn, I don’t go in with a plan. I just let my creativity fly and spark new ideas for capturing the most beautiful milestone of that new life. Chances are, if the parents want it or dream it - I can achieve it!

So, there it is! Just a few things to expect during your newborn’s first photoshoot. If you haven’t already, book your spot with the expert - Glen Carbon photographer Conner James Photography.

Preparing for Your Maternity Session: Tips for Expecting Moms by Edwardsvile IL Photographer Conner James Photography

You’re well into your third trimester and it’s time for your maternity photoshoot. This is usually a thrilling and nerve-wracking time for mom’s. These photos will likely be looked at for years, shared among family and friends and quite certainly placed in that precious baby book. So, naturally, mom’s have some questions about this photoshoot. Should it be done outside or in a studio? Should partners be involved? What’s good to wear? How about hair and makeup? The list goes on; but don’t worry, we’re here to help.

Wardrobe: What you wear is so important, in fact, what you choose to wear can make or break your maternity photos. Since we are trying to showcase your bump, you’ll want a dress, skirt or blouse that is nicely fitted at the bust just above your bump. A flowy, floor length dress that flatters your silhouette is the most popular among moms-to-be and we couldn’t agree more! It’s always so pretty to see maternity photos of a woman in something she can play and twirl in. Glen Carbon, Illinois newborn photographer Conner James Photography makes this really simple. Owner and photographer Christine has a selection of gorgeous gowns that are comfortable and flattering. Not to mention they will make you look and feel simply beautiful.

Hair: You certainly want your hair to look fabulous for your maternity photos. And with our recommendations, it will! If you have longer locks, you have a few really fantastic options. Long, loose waves are a win-win. They are gorgeous and add an incredibly romantic vibe to your photos. Pulling your hair to one side with a loose braid or twist is another one of our favorites! To make this look even more unique, use a messy bun or ponytail to pull everything together. If you have shorter hair that may not leave much for styling, you can wear a crown of flowers or greenery (super gorgeous). Even one simple flower pinned behind your ear is incredibly sweet and adds a dainty bit of femininity to your overall look. There are some pretty crafty people who make headpieces (specifically for maternity photos) to make hair styling easier and more unique for your shoot. And Edwardsville, Illinois newborn photographer Conner James Photography can help you make these decisions based on the type of theme you want.

Makeup: Keep it simple and fresh. Apply matte makeup, nothing shimmery, shiny or glittery. In maternity photos, you want it to look like you're wearing makeup while also not wearing any at all, make sense? We suggest applying your makeup in natural light. Those fancy light-up mirrors might make it easier to see but the bulbs don’t reflect the true color or tone of your skin. Also, we recommend neutral colors in your eye shadows. Avoid dark, funky colors that can make your eyes look small while also pulling attention away from your beautiful bump. Eyeliner and mascara should be used to accentuate your eyes only - not overpower them. If you need some personal guidance, baby photographer Christine of Conner James Photography in Edwardsville, Illinois has you covered!

Aside from your wardrobe, hair and makeup - relax and enjoy yourself. Maternity photos, no matter how many times you have them done, are precious and unique. So, when you’re planning this milestone photoshoot, you only need to make one phone call. And that’s to Conner James Photography in Glen Carbon, Illinois.

How To Vet Your Newborn Photographer Ahead Of Time from Edwardsville IL Newborn Photographer Conner James Photography

Choosing a newborn photographer can seem like a daunting task. Everywhere you turn, there’s this baby photographer and that baby photographer. But there are a few things you really need to take into consideration when making your final selection. After all, your newborn is precious cargo so naturally you want a photographer with the right level of experience. In the next few paragraphs, we’ll tell you what to look for and how to vet your newborn photographer ahead of time.

Experience: You certainly want a newborn photographer with more than just a few years of experience taking pictures of newborns. This type of photography is very different from wedding photography, for example. Make sure you seek out someone with an extensive portfolio that proves how good they are. Glen Carbon, Illinois newborn photographer Conner James Photography is on that list. Photographer Christine has been professionally taking pictures of newborns for almost 12 years - so over 1,000 babies. How’s that for experience?

Safety Measures: Not all baby photographers are trained in newborn posing and safety but this is a huge deal when it comes to your photographer search. Think about it, a baby that’s just a few days old is extremely delicate and needs to be treated as such. First aid and CPR are reassuring but what about newborn posing and safety? Edwardsville, Illinois newborn photographer Conner James Photography is triple certified in newborn posing and safety. Photographer Christine continues to attend workshops and trainings to ensure her qualifications are at the highest level of perfection.

Editing / Retouching: When it comes to photographing newborns, the level of editing and/or retouching your chosen photographer provides can certainly influence your decision. Some may edit and not provide retouching. Editing may only include adjusting photo sharpness, light, toning colors, etc. Retouching involves more work and can include correcting hair, skin, body, props, and changing colors. This can be huge for some newborn parents who want their baby’s acne or jaundice removed from their final images.

Reviews: This one may seem pretty obvious, but you’d be shocked if we told you just how many people select a newborn photographer without checking any customer reviews. Now keep in mind, there’s always going to be an unsatisfied customer somewhere. So don’t let one negative review throw you off if you’ve found a baby photographer you really like. But don’t brush these off either because reviews can make or break your final decision. That’s one really great thing about Glen Carbon photographer Conner James Photography. Christine’s reviews (for the past 12 years) consistently average five stars.

So, when it’s time to search for and vet your newborn photographer, don’t fret. Make the easiest and best decision of your life and choose St. Louis photographer Conner James Photography. The experience, safety, editing measures and reviews photographer Christine has backing her name are indisputable. And we encourage you to fact check us, browse through her website and we’re sure you’ll agree.

Sibling Photos: Expectations vs. Reality

Sibling photos are worth everything to parents. Seeing all your babies together is an amazing feeling. Watching all your children interact with each other and giving hugs and kisses, what could be better than that? The day is here. You’ve been anticipating this for months. Is this going to work out? Are you expecting too much? Too little? Will today be an epic failure? Maybe an absolute success? Read on to learn more.

A newborn photo session can be stressful for new parents. They can even be stressful for second or third time parents, especially if siblings are involved. But baby photographer Conner James Photography in Glen Carbon, Illinois can make these photos fun, quick, and simple.

For the most part, the siblings participating are toddler age - around two to five years old. When you think of a family, with a newborn, plus a toddler or two, in a photography studio, it can certainly seem overwhelming. It’s important to go into the photo session prepared for any and everything. Let all of your expectations fly out the window and embrace the reality of how things will likely really go. Let’s dive into this further.

Expectation: My toddler will smile and pose and love the camera; this will be easy.

Reality: If your toddler is a tad on the tired side or even a little bit hungry, this can make things really difficult as they will likely become ornery and uncooperative. This happens all the time so try to schedule your photo session for a time when your toddler is well rested and fed. Edwardsville, Illinois newborn photographer Conner James Photography has a knack for keeping toddlers interested, engaged and having fun - even when they are tired and hungry. So if you’re looking for a baby photographer with this kind of know-how; look no further!

Expectation: My toddler loves our newborn; he/she won’t be jealous.

Reality: During a newborn photo session, your toddler could experience some jealousy when all eyes are on the new baby. Talk to your toddler before the photos and let them know they are just as interesting and important as their baby brother/sister. And don’t be surprised if your toddler needs some time to play a bit or rest during the photos. This is normal and to be expected. Christine with Conner James Photography in Glen Carbon, Illinois, is a success in anticipating toddler behavior while their photos are being taken. She’s just as good at coaching littles through their photos as she is with coaching overwhelmed, sleep-deprived parents.

Expectation: My toddler is a good listener and will do exactly what we say.

Reality: Sure, this can happen in any newborn/sibling photo session. But, don’t be surprised if things go awry when it’s your turn. Think about it: your child is dressed up, in a photography studio, they’re being told how to sit, stand, lay down, smile, hold their baby brother/sister, etc. It’s a lot for them to take in, not to mention they too are adjusting to life with a newborn. With over a decade of experience, Christine with Conner James Photography is a newborn photographer unlike any other. She is pure magic. She gets small children to absolutely love having their photos taken, while also behaving, listening and following directions. So, do yourself a favor and book St. Louis Photographer Conner James Photography for your newborn session.

Edwardsville IL Newborn Photographer Conner James Photography The Best Age for Newborn Photos

You’re lying in your hospital bed. You’re swollen. You’re sore. You’re exhausted. And you’re in love. You’re not laying there alone. A very tiny baby is in your company, and not just any baby - YOUR newborn. Congratulations! You’re a mommy!

The first few days after having your baby is a complete whirlwind. All these things (and a whole lot more) are on your mind:

  • Feeding

  • Pumping

  • Sleeping

  • Pediatricians

But wait, there is one more important thing you MUST add to that list; newborn photos. Don’t worry though, we’ve done your homework for you so you can spend less time searching the web. Glen Carbon, Illinois baby photographer, Conner James Photography is your go-to newborn and even family photographer. Just make sure you get your little bundle of joy scheduled sooner rather than later.

The best age to take newborn photos is within the first two weeks (6-14 days) of the baby being born. Why? Because this is when your newborn sleeps the most, which makes it easier to get the best poses. It’s true, though, that this recommendation may differ from photographer to photographer, but it’s pretty well agreed upon that the best newborn pictures are taken when the baby is sleepiest and still curled up like in the womb.

Usually by the time your newborn is six days old, he/she is on a pretty consistent feeding schedule of every two to three hours. This is great for photos so the session isn’t interrupted every 20-30 minutes for the newborn to eat. Not to mention, it’s also less stressful for mom.

Most parents want those “melt-your-heart” newborn pictures where their baby is fast asleep, wrapped up like a ball, placed in a bucket or a bowl, and adorned with the sweetest headband or hat. While this is pretty effortless when your newborn is in the 6-14 day window, there are a few talented baby photographers who can successfully achieve these poses when the baby is older. Edwardsville, Illinois newborn photographer Conner James Photography is proudly among those few.

If your photos get taken when your newborn is 15+ days old, that’s okay! They just might need more settling to fall asleep and require a bit more work to pose. Also, don’t be surprised if your newborn is awake and alert in many of the photos. It’s always sweet to capture your little ones open eyes when they’re so young, however, since they can’t focus yet, they could appear cross-eyed in pictures. But with Glen Carbon, Illinois newborn photographer Conner James as your pro behind the lens, you don’t have to worry. You will receive the most beautiful newborn photos once it’s all said and done.

When you hit the 30 day (or one month mark), your newborn will certainly be awake during their photo session. At this point, the baby may resist those swaddled, sleepy poses that parents yearn for. Also, that adorable newborn curl is likely more stretched out by now, meaning the poses for your baby will differ from younger newborns. Don’t worry though, you can trust the talent behind Edwardsville, Illinois baby photographer Conner James to deliver the most precious newborn photos of your newfound love.

What Skills Do You Need To Be A Newborn Photographer? by Glen Carbon Photographer Conner James Photography

In every profession, a set of skills is required. Architects and engineers need some knowledge in math while journalists and book authors need to be able to write. It all makes sense. In order to do something, you must possess (at some level) a talent for it. The same goes for being a photographer, but more specifically here, a newborn photographer. Keep reading to learn more about what it really takes to be a success in this field.

While there are countless skills needed to be a newborn photographer, we’re going to touch on just a few. And the best part is, these few skills have already been mastered by Edwardsville, Illinois baby photographer, Conner James Photography.

Creative Attention to Detail: It seems like you hear this one a lot and in several job descriptions. But it means something entirely different when it’s referring to a baby photographer. Think about it; a newborn has the tiniest of features - their lips, nearly microscopic eyelashes, dainty fingernails, toenails, etc. You absolutely need a keen eye for detail to successfully capture such delicate features. We’re not taking headshots, we’re taking photos to celebrate the milestone of a new life. And that means being able to create visually appealing photographs that require a strict attention to the most minuet detail.

Patience: This one is a biggie and a skill that Glen Carbon, Illinois newborn photographer Conner James Photography has conquered. Newborns are completely unaware of what we want or need from them during their photoshoot. All they know at this point in their early life is to eat, sleep, poop, repeat. So once they are all wrapped up and posed, it should come as no surprise when they get fussy from belly cramps, gas, or out of additional hunger. When this happens (and it will) it could mean un-posing baby, unwrapping them, getting them adjusted, burped, and/or fed - and starting all over again. But as a baby photographer, one that is skilled, this is no headache or setback. It’s just part of an everyday newborn photoshoot.

Safety Training: Believe it or not, there are countless newborn photographers who have zero safety training. Some think it’s not a true necessity. But it is and here’s why:

  • A skilled newborn photographer needs to be aware of signs that a baby is overheating or in distress.

  • A skilled newborn photographer needs a strong understanding of the most up-to-date posing techniques to reduce the risk of injury.

  • A skilled newborn photographer makes sure the baby is never too hot, too cold or wrapped too tightly.

  • A skilled newborn photographer never leaves a baby in a prop unsupported.

  • A skilled newborn photographer makes sure the baby’s head is always supported.

Conner James Photography of Edwardsville, Illinois is triple certified in newborn safety and posing.

Empathy: New and even veteran parents (while in love with their newborn) are also feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, etc. Do everything you can to make them feel comfortable and relaxed. Put yourself in their shoes, this is a beautiful yet very stressful time for mom and dad. As a newborn photographer you have been selected to take one-of-a-kind photos that will be looked at, shared, and remembered for many years.

When you’re searching for your newborn photographer, you’ll find the diamond in the rough with Conner James Photography in Glen Carbon, Illinois. Clients come from near and far - even by airplane - for a two-hour long newborn photo session. Photographer Christine possesses the creative attention to detail, patience, safety training, empathy and so much more. Your once in a lifetime photo session will certainly be one you’ll never forget.

Why You Should Hire a Professional Photographer like Glen Carbon IL Photographer Conner James Photography Inc.

The day has finally arrived. You’ve waited nine long months (maybe even longer) to meet this tiny person that you and your loved one have created. From admiring those tiny fingers and toes to the precious wrinkles on your newborn's forehead - you’ve been waiting for this. And now you can’t wait to capture this oh-so-beautiful time, these anticipated moments, this newfound love that will last a lifetime. So naturally, you want your photos to last that long too, but how? Keep reading to find out.

Some people think professional photos aren’t worth the investment. Some will even go as far as saying it’s a waste of money. Let’s be honest; really good, professional photography can be pricey. Especially when we’re talking about maternity and newborn photos, baby milestones or family photos. When you want to celebrate life's unique, irreplaceable moments it’s best to invest in a true professional, really it is. They have a gift and a vision other photographers simply don’t. They possess the artistic talent that truly transforms a photo and turns it into something magical.

Through the beauty and art of photographs, we can truly hold on to memories. It’s easy to say, “Oh, I’ll remember this.” Or, “How could I possibly forget that?” etc. But at some point in time, we will likely forget something special, a day, a time, or a person that changed us - it’s just human nature. However, we do possess the power to freeze those treasured moments in time. It’s simple - hire a professional photographer like Glen Carbon, Illinois newborn photographer, Conner James Photography. This short story will solidify our case.

A gal (let’s call her Miranda) was planning her wedding about 20 years ago. She booked the best florist and caterer money could buy. But when it came to a photographer, she asked a friend of hers (let’s call him Robert) if he would do the honors. He was a good photographer, never claimed to be a professional, but he would often tout his ability using a camera. At gatherings and events, he was always behind the camera - snapping up the memories no one wanted to forget. On the day of Miranda’s wedding, Robert was there, clicking the day away and capturing this bride’s magical day. When Robert got home that evening, he was sick to discover he never put a memory card in his camera. Miranda’s wedding day was gone, just like that. It came and went, and the only photos she had were the ones taken from a few cheap disposable cameras. You’ve surely heard the cliche “You get what you pay for.” Case in point.

With Conner James Photography, you never have to worry about the level of expertise, the quality, beauty or if you’ll actually end up with photos. You will be working with a true pro who was mentored by one of the best newborn photographers in the world - Ana Brandt. Great photos are about more than just a camera. A professional won’t leave you with just photos, they’ll also leave you with the experience - the memories - of the shoot. If you’re still thinking about making that investment, go for it! Chances are you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the value you really get for your money.
